Soulstix: Move to the Groove! is a 2D side-scrolling rhythm game. You play as a girl named Comet, running down an endless corridor dodging obstacles to the beat of the music. This was done for one of the PIGSquad's Summer Slow Jams of 2020, with the theme of "Ghost Notes."
Contributions
I was the sole programmer of the project. I programmed the gameplay, including the main character's movement and the movement of the obstacles with certain notes of the song, and the UI, including the menus and feedback for the player.
I designed the levels of the two songs included in the game, working with the artist and the musician to get the vibes of each song feeling good and the corresponding difficulty of gameplay right to the best of my ability.
Takeaways
This was my first complete game project! A lot of new experiences were started here, including working with other people of other disciplines on one project and programming complete gameplay and UI.
This was my first game jam project! Managing a project under a deadline was also a new experience, as it helped me understand how to work with others to get things done on time.
This was my first complete project in Godot! It was a breath of fresh air compared to other game engines I tried using. It being easy to use and understand helped me make leaps and bounds in learning how to make a game. Since then, it's been my go-to engine for all kinds of projects!
