Broken News is a 2D point-and-click puzzle game. You play as a disgraced reporter that has lost all credibility, and needs to regain it by publishing truthful articles. You use the mouse to interact with your environment by creating and publishing as many articles as you can to your boss before the end of the work day.
Contributions
I was the sole programmer of the project. I programmed the gameplay, including the article creation and publication systems and the tutorial, and the UI, including the menus and feedback for the player.
I designed the mechanics of the game, including the article creation and publication systems, with the help of the artist, musician, and voice actors on the team.
Takeaways
This was my first time working with voice actors on a game. Although their roles were limited, it was a good learning experience to understand what directions to give them and how to integrate their work into the game.
As with Busy Mind, this game was also a hard lesson in what makes or breaks the design of a game. The concept of the game was funny, but hard to work into meaningful or engaging mechanics. It was fun working with the people I had, but we likely should have experimented more with the idea of the game, or gone in a different direction completely.
